Thoughtful software.
Wider access.

Pepper's Lab is a small, independent software studio building practical tools for people and fields underserved by traditional development. We aim to make technology easier to access and use, with care for communities and the environment.

Approach

We build for fields where custom software has cost too much and general tools have been too hard to use.

What we make
Custom software for one organisation at a time. Each tool is shaped around the work people already do, and kept plain enough to pick up without a manual.
How we work
We start from the people who will use the tool. Staff at an office desk and members on a phone get different screens, each built for where their work happens.
Open source
We plan to share what we build as open source where we can. We have not published anything yet.
Sustainability
Care for communities and the environment is a value we hold. We want it to guide what we take on and how we build.

Current workIn development

A contract-farming system for an agricultural cooperative.

Our current project moves a cooperative's contract-farming paperwork online, for its office staff and for its member farmers. The client's name and location are not disclosed.

  1. E-contracts

Members read their contract documents and sign by hand on their own phone.

    Implemented
  2. Farmland lookup

Each field is matched to the public land register, and the contracted area is checked against the official record.

    Implemented
  3. Farmer and contract records

Members, fields and contracts are kept together, and each year's contracts are preserved when the season closes.

    Implemented
  4. Admin dashboard

Office staff search contracts, open the details of any field, and follow the year's totals.

    Implemented

How we build

We are a small studio, and Claude Code is part of how we work. We use it for implementation, for first drafts of the interface, for support in programming languages that are new to us, and for improving screens quickly on a modular design system.

The four parts above are implemented. The system has been in development since May 2026 and is not finished.

ExplorationsNot yet built

What we want to explore next.

Two ideas that use the Claude API. Neither has been built, and no user evaluation has been carried out.

  • Plain-language contract explanations

Explaining contract terms in everyday words, so members can understand what they are signing.

  • Multilingual guidance

Guiding people through the system in their own language.
